Update/Weekly schedule

What's happening in Div. 14????

From time to time I will post a general update about what students are learning about in class and when we embark in more in depth projects and assignments I will be sure to post the details of these as well.

Weekly schedule:
Library exchange - Tuesday at 11:30
Computers - Tuesday at 9:15
P.E. with M Tremblay - Wednesday and Thursday
Dictee - Thursday

We also have Math quizzes at the end of the week to review concepts being covered. Both dictee test and math quiz results are written in the student's planner. In Math, we are currently reviewing number sense concepts such as place value and learning about estimation strategies. We are also doing a Roald Dahl author study in English and students have been assigned a particular book to read and are required to do regular reading responses in their duo tangs.

A few reminders

Dear families,

Most parents have now scheduled to meet for parent teacher conferences and were sent home a letter today reminding you of the date and time of your appointment and a discussion guide you may find helpful for our conference. I look forward to meeting with all of you over the next few weeks.

Just a reminder to send in Emergency Kits, Student Information Sheets and inside shoes for those students who have not yet brought these items in. Also an application for the grade 5 active pass for Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows leisure centre was sent home today along with a notice for Laity View Family Photo Night Fundraiser.

Finally, just to let you know that our school is fortunate to have been chosen again for the BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program which delivers fresh produce every other week to the classrooms. Please inform me or the school if you DO NOT want your child to participate in this free program.

Thank you,
Mme Homeniuk

September Newsletter

Bienvenue a la 5e annee!
Mme Homeniuk, Div. 14
2012-2013
Dear Families,
Welcome to a new school year! I am excited to be back after a year of maternity leave and looking forward to many successful and positive learning experiences with your child in the year ahead!
Here are some reminders and helpful information:
·         Open House 6-7 pm on Thursday, September 13th, 2012. Hopefully you can all make it out to say hello and visit your child’s classroom, however if not we can always arrange an alternate date and time. This is a good opportunity to sign up for parent-teacher intake conferences as well.

·         Parent-teacher conferences take place on Friday, September 21st beginning at 12:15 pm. This is an early dismissal day, however I will not be able to schedule in meetings for all families in this one afternoon so if you have a particular date and time you would prefer to meet please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate any alternate meeting dates.

·         The class is expected to enter and exit the school through the outside classroom door only. Students are also expected to have a pair of indoor shoes that are also used for P.E. with Mr. Tremblay as part of their required P.E. uniform along with shorts or pair of comfortable pants and a t-shirt.

·         Reading: Students independently read for a minimum of 15 minutes a day at school and I recommend at least another 15 minutes at home as part of daily homework. Also, Library Exchange occurs on Tuesdays and if books are not returned this day, students will be unable to take out new books.

·         Homework: In addition to daily reading there will be weekly dictee and spelling to be completed. Besides this, homework is generally assigned if students have not completed assignments in the allotted time in class or project work is assigned. I also encourage the regular review of math concepts being covered in class and practicing basic math facts (multiplication and division) through the use of various card, dice and/or online math websites.

·         Communication: The student planners are a great communication tool between home and school in addition to helping teach students organizational skills and will be checked and signed daily.

We also have a class website/blog that will be updated regularly as a tool to keep families informed of the happenings in class: http://mmehomeniuk.blogspot.ca/
Here you will also find a link to Student Blogs that each student will be contributing to and sharing with their class mates. The student’s blog site is designed only for use within a class and is not made public on the Internet. In addition to this link there are other links to useful learning resources on the web and guidelines for internet safety.

Finally, please feel free to email me Natasha_Homeniuk@sd42.ca or contact at me at the school 604-463-7108 with any questions or concerns you may have throughout the school year.  I look forward to working with your child to create a fun, exciting and enjoyable learning environment for everyone!

Sincerely,
 Mme N. Homeniuk
