Conference Agenda (20 minutes):
  • Once in the classroom, you will introduce parent(s)/guardian(s)
  • You will discuss the assignment you selected on "Our Proudest Moments" bulletin board. Explain why this was chosen, etc.
  • We will sit at the round table together, show your parents where they will sit.
  • We will discuss the portfolio reflection sheet you completed and any other questions you've considered.
  • Report Card/Set Goals - Now we will go over the report card (Competencies, self-assessment, Literacy and Numeracy). You will be asked to share your goals at this point (form the reflection sheet) which will be written onto the last page of the report card.
  • We will all sign the report card. I will keep it to copy and send it home at a later date for you to keep.
  • Thank your parents for coming to the conference.
  • You did it! Congratulations!

The Spiderwick Chronicles - Final Assignment

Novel Study Final Assignment: DUE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15th

PART 1 : Character Scrapbook & Book Review
Use the format below to write a  book review of the novel: The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black

Paragraph 1: Summary
Write a summary for the entire series including a main idea from each of the five books in the chronicles:
Book One: The Field Guide (Setting, characters, problem/conflict)
Book Two: The Seeing Stone (Plot - Rising action)
Book Three: Lucinda`s Secret (Plot - Rising action)
Book Four: The Ironwood Tree (climax)
Book Five: The Wrath of Mulgarath (resolution & conclusion)
When writing your summary also consider themes in the book, the genre of book and the mood of the book. 

Paragraph 2: Personal Opinion
Write your opinion about characters and the plot in the book. What were your favorite or least favorite parts. Who was your favorite charater and explain why. Give speciific examples.

Paragraph 3:Recommendation
Would you recommend this book. If so to what audience? What rating would you give it? Make any comparisons with the movie. Would you recommend reading before watching the movie or vice-versa?

Finally, glue a good copy of your complete summary to the back of your character scrapbook as part of your final assignment.


PART 2: Creative Activity of your choice
Novel Study: Creative Activity

Choose one of the following activities to complete.

1. Write a letter to the authors describing the faeirie evidence you've seen. Be as descriptive as possible and provide evidence with accompanying illustrations or diagrams.

2. Design a comic strip or mini- graphic novel that illustrates a main event from the chronicles. You may choose to select one specific event from one particular book or a more general summary of all the books. Use at least 6 frames and speech bubbles for dialogue between characters.

3. Create a Faerie house using natural materials and write a descriptive story on how the house was built including where it was built, what materials were used, the appearance of the house and why/what faeries would be attracted to the house.

4. Riddles & Rhymes: The phooka only spoke in riddles and Thimbletack spoke in rhymes. Explain the difference between the two. Research other published examples of riddles and rhymes and create your own riddle and/or rhyme to express yourself or an event from the book for example, Hogsqueal's victory over Mulgarath.

This week at a glance:

Halloween - jeudi
 You can wear your Halloween costume to school on Thursday. We will be doing some Halloween related activities in the morning and there is a Gr. 4 and 5 dance in the afternoon. We will not be having a classroom ``party`` where students are required to bring any food to share with the class. 

Art Card Fundraiser
Students will be completing their art card fundraiser at school which will be sent home this week to view if you choose to participate in this fundraiser.

Interim Report Cards
Students will be coming home with an informal interim report card this week which is to be signed and returned to school. The purpose of this informal report is to keep parents informed of student progress between formal reporting periods and reports on student`s social responsibility and classroom work habits and effort.

A letter will be soming home later in mid-November to explain more about this year`s 3-way reporting format and to sign up for conferences.

 Today we had a drumming workshop with artist Fana Soro from the Ivory Coast. It was awesome!  The students had a chance to reflect on something they could take away from this presentation. Some of there answers included:

  • learning more about Africa
  • what it means to be part of a community
  • it`s important to have fun and listen
  • it`s sun to sing and dance
  • SMILE :)

BIOGRAPHY RESEARCH PROJECT REQUIREMENTS




Objective: Using the writing process and research skills, students will investigate the nonfiction genre and use the information learned to create an informational piece of writing.

Project will mostly be completed during class time.

There are three components to this project. The components are as follows:

  1. A published informational writing piece about the life and contributions of the person you have chosen (revised, edited, and neatly written or typed), 2 - 4 paragraphs summarizing main ideas. Question: Quelles contributions cette personne a fait pour la société canadienne?
  1. A timeline depicting five to seven significant events in the person’s life such as birth, setbacks, accomplishments, awards, illnesses, or death.
  1. A visual component containing graphic features such as photographs, captions, charts, maps, and/or tables.
